Reality: The Habitat for Humanity Homeownership Program is not a giveaway. Eligible families apply to purchase their homes with an affordable mortgage. They also contribute “Sweat Equity” hours, which involves volunteering in areas like financial coaching, working at our ReStore, attending homeowner education classes, and assisting in home construction or renovation projects.

Myth 2: Habitat houses reduce a neighborhood’s property values.

Reality: Affordable housing, including Habitat homes, has been shown in numerous studies to have no adverse effect on neighborhood property values. Our homes are designed to blend in with the surrounding community, maintaining aesthetic and economic harmony.

Reality: Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller in Americus, Georgia, inspired by Reverend Clarence Jordan’s philosophy of “co-working” at Koinonia Farm. While President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, are dedicated supporters and volunteers, they are not the founders of Habitat.
