The True Cost of Unsuitable Donations

At Rose Rock Habitat for Humanity ReStore, we are immensely grateful for the generous support and donations we receive from our community. These donations are the lifeblood of our mission, not only helping us raise funds for building affordable housing but also promoting sustainability by giving items a second life. In fact, 1,478,091 pounds was diverted from the landfill from our ReStore in 2023! Generous donations from people like YOU have helped greatly in this effort! We thank you for your support! However, there’s an often overlooked aspect of donation that affects our operations and ultimately our mission – the cost and impact of unsuitable donations and items left outside our doors when we are not open.

The Challenge of Unsuitable Donations

While every donation comes with good intentions, certain items that are non-sellable or prohibited at our ReStore pose a challenge. These include broken electronics, outdated heavy appliances, non-working tools, or broken furniture. Handling these items diverts essential resources from our mission, as they require sorting, storing, and eventually disposing of, which incurs significant costs.

What Happens to Non-Sellable Items?

It’s important to note that not all unsuitable donations go to waste. At Rose Rock Habitat for Humanity ReStore, we make every effort to redirect items we cannot sell to other local nonprofits that can use them. This process, however, involves sorting and coordinating with other organizations, which also demands time and effort from our dedicated staff and volunteers. Although we are committed to minimizing waste and supporting other charitable causes, this redistribution process adds to our operational costs. In 2023 alone, we spent over $13,000 on trash and dump runs for unsuitable donations. This figure does not include the time our employees and volunteers dedicated to sorting through these items for donations that are directed to local community partners, resulting in valuable hours lost from our core mission.

The Cost of After-Hours Dumping

Dumping items outside our store when we are closed is another problematic behavior that impacts our operations. These items, often left exposed to weather, can quickly become unsellable or may pose safety hazards. The cost of cleaning up these dumped donations not only strains our financial resources but also diverts our staff from other valuable activities, such as customer service and store management. It is a loss, especially when items that are resaleable until they are left to the elements.

How You Can Help

To maximize the impact of your generosity and support our mission effectively, here are a few ways you can help:

  1. Check Our Acceptance Guidelines: Before heading out to donate, please check the list of items we can accept on our website or give us a call. Ensuring your donation can be utilized makes a huge difference.
  2. Donate During Business Hours: To ensure that your donation is protected from the elements and properly processed, please drop off items during our operating hours. This helps us keep your donations in sellable condition.
  3. Schedule a Pickup: For larger items or if you’re unsure whether your items are suitable, consider scheduling a pickup. This service helps us ensure that what we collect will be beneficial for our store and the community.
  4. Spread the Word: Educate friends and family about the best practices for donating to the ReStore. Awareness is key to preventing the problem of unsuitable and improperly timed donations.
  5. Volunteer: Join us as a volunteer to help with the sorting and organizing donations. Your hands-on help allows us to efficiently manage donations and keep operational costs low.

Our Commitment Continues

At Rose Rock Habitat for Humanity ReStore, we are committed to our community and to environmental stewardship. We ask for your cooperation and understanding to ensure that every donation counts towards building a better future for those in need. Together, with your appropriate donations and support, we can continue to make a significant difference in the lives of many families.

We thank you for your continued support and thoughtful donations. Let’s all work together to keep our costs down and our impacts high, ensuring that every donation helps us move closer to a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
